X Removes NFT Feature for Premium Subscribers Amid Shift in Focus

X, formerly known as Twitter, has removed the feature that allowed premium subscribers to use NFTs as their display pictures. This move comes as a surprise for many since it was previously available for NFTs minted on the Ethereum blockchain.

NFT Feature Removal

The NFT feature was initially launched in January 2022, before Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company. It gained popularity among crypto enthusiasts and collectors, who saw it as a way to showcase their valuable digital assets on a popular social media platform.

The use of NFTs as display pictures on X was easily recognizable due to its unique hexagon-shaped border, in contrast to the standard circular border. This feature was a popular choice among premium subscribers who wanted to showcase their ownership of rare and valuable digital assets through their avatars.

According to X’s support page, premium users who have already set NFTs as their avatars before this change will still retain the hexagonal border. However, new changes are no longer possible for those who wish to use NFTs as their display pictures. This has caused disappointment among some premium subscribers who were planning to switch up their avatars with different NFTs.

Shift in Focus

The sudden removal of the NFT feature coincides with X’s shift in focus towards becoming a “video-first” platform. According to reports, there has been a 30% increase in video views on the platform between 2022 and 2023. This change is seen as a strategic move by X to attract more users and compete with other video-focused platforms such as TikTok and YouTube.

In addition to the removal of the NFT feature, X has also announced plans to expand its use of artificial intelligence and introduce peer-to-peer payments within the year. This shows that the platform is continuously evolving and adapting to meet the changing needs and preferences of its users.

A Trend Among Social Media Platforms?

In a related context, Meta (formerly known as Facebook) also removed NFT-related features from its Facebook and Instagram platforms in March of the previous year. This could signify a trend among social media platforms as they shift their focus towards other features and capabilities.

Although the NFT feature has been removed for now, it is uncertain whether it will make a comeback in the future. With the rise of NFTs and the growing interest in cryptocurrency, it is possible that X may reintroduce this feature or come up with other ways for users to showcase their digital assets on the platform.

Conclusion

The removal of the NFT feature from X’s premium subscription service has caused disappointment among some of its users. However, it also highlights the platform’s commitment to constantly evolve and adapt to meet the changing preferences of its users.

As X shifts towards becoming a “video-first” platform, it will be interesting to see how its focus on artificial intelligence and peer-to-peer payments will impact the user experience.

In the meantime, we can only speculate on what other changes and developments are in store for X and its users. With the fast-paced nature of social media, one thing is for sure – there will always be something new to look forward to on X.
