Anyone with bold aspirations will have dreamt of one day living in ‘a great house’. Now one lucky, deep-pocketed individual might be able to live in the Great House. The aptly named home in Burford, Oxfordshire is up for sale for £4.25 million and a revolving door of influential guests have walked through its hallowed halls since its construction in 1680. Though the identity of the architect is unknown, estate agent Savills believes that many of the building’s characteristics suggest Christopher Kempster or Nicholas Hawksmoor were involved. Both architects were contemporaries of Sir Christopher Wren, the visionary behind landmarks like St Paul’s Cathedral.
Satirical author Fanny Burney and Oxford Dictionary writer Samuel Johnson both visited friends who resided at the property. During World War II, many members of Winston Churchill’s cabinet stayed at The Great House, while the PM resided in the equally glamorous Ditchley Park nearby.
