Yacht of the Week: Enigma, the 74.5-metre icon that changed superyacht design

There are superyachts that impress by virtue of their size, and then there are those that genuinely change the course of yacht design. More than three decades after she first slipped into the water, Enigma still belongs firmly in the latter camp.

Built by Blohm+Voss in Hamburg and launched in 1991, the 74.5-metre yacht was originally christened Eco. She was commissioned by Mexican media magnate Emilio Azcárraga Milmo, then chairman and CEO of Televisa, with a brief that placed considerable emphasis on both speed and unconventional design.

The result was extraordinary. British designer Martin Francis created a yacht that looked unlike almost anything else afloat. Most recognisable are the great bands of convex glass wrapped around her superstructure, a radical feature at the time and one that remains unmistakably Enigma today. Her low profile and elongated proportions only add to the effect. More than 35 years on, she still looks surprisingly futuristic.

But Enigma was never simply an exercise in aesthetics. Her original brief was equally obsessed with performance. Two 5,000hp Deutz diesels are joined by an 18,500hp General Electric gas turbine, with power delivered through three waterjets. Current specifications put her maximum speed at around 35 knots, remarkable performance for a yacht measuring almost 75 metres and displacing 1,150 gross tonnes. The sales brochure quotes a still-formidable 32 knots.

Her ownership history is almost as colourful as her design. After Azcárraga, Eco was acquired in 1999 by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison and renamed Katana. Ellison made his own mark on the yacht, most famously converting an aft deck originally intended to carry tenders and a seaplane into a basketball court.

In 2007, she passed into the hands of British businessman Aidan Barclay, son of the late newspaper proprietor Sir David Barclay. Under Barclay’s ownership she became Enigma, the name by which many still know her today. He kept her for a decade before she was sold through Edmiston in 2017 for her €47.5 million asking price to a European buyer, becoming Zeus in the process.

It is quite the provenance: Eco, Katana, Enigma, Zeus, four names and four distinct chapters in the life of one extraordinary yacht.

Inside, things become rather more restrained. Enigma accommodates 15 guests across six staterooms, with quarters for a crew of 21. The interiors make excellent use of those famous windows, with expansive living spaces surrounded by glass and extraordinary views across the water. There are generous dining and entertaining areas, a glass-enclosed gym and vast exterior decks.

At 11.2 metres across the beam, with a steel hull and 1,150 GT of internal volume, there is considerable substance beneath that distinctive silhouette. But Enigma’s appeal has never really been about numbers.

Plenty of newer yachts are larger. Others are more lavish or technologically advanced. Very few possess anything approaching this much character. Those extraordinary windows have never been copied, and the yacht remains instantly recognisable in an industry where individuality is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve.

That feels even more pertinent today. Enigma is a reminder that true yachting icons aren’t necessarily defined by length or price. They’re the boats you can recognise from half a mile away.

And now there is an opportunity to own her. Currently sailing as Zeus, the yacht is on the market for €77 million, with Merle Wood & Associates among the brokers representing the sale. She is also set to appear at the Monaco Yacht Show from 23–26 September 2026, offering prospective owners the chance to see one of the most recognisable yachts ever built in the flesh.
