XRPL: The Future of Fast Financial Transactions

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) was designed differently from many blockchains because its primary goal was never to support speculation first. According to Aditya Turakhia, Vice President of Institutional Markets at Ripple, the network was built from the beginning for payments, financial institutions, and the fast movement of value.

1. Purpose-Built for Payments

The founders designed XRPL specifically for payments and financial use cases. Instead of trying to become a general-purpose blockchain for every possible application, its architecture focused on one key requirement: moving value quickly, reliably, and cheaply.

That design choice helped XRPL achieve settlement times of around 3–4 seconds, with transaction costs generally below one cent.

2. No Need to Build Everything Through Smart Contracts

Unlike many blockchains that rely heavily on smart contracts, XRPL has several financial functions built directly into the ledger itself.

This means developers do not need to create everything from scratch. Native functionality already supports features such as:

  • Escrow
  • Decentralized exchange (DEX)
  • Central limit order books
  • Compliance-related tools
  • Tokenized assets

Developers and financial institutions can access these features through API endpoints, allowing them to plug directly into existing ledger functionality.

3. Less Complexity Means Better Speed

The network includes core financial functions, so developers do not need to deploy complex smart contracts for basic payment and trading.

That reduces unnecessary layers of code and helps keep transactions fast, predictable, and affordable.

The result is an infrastructure that enables fast, low-cost payments without forcing users to pay high gas fees or wait for long confirmation times.

4. Designed for Real-World Payments

Next up is the design philosophy, if someone buys a coffee at Starbucks, they should not have to pay $20 or $30 in gas fees or wait several minutes for the payment to confirm.

XRPL prioritizes cheap, fast, and reliable everyday payments.

5. A Focus on Scalable Adoption

Every major ledger enhancement follows the same broader goal. Increasing adoption in a safe and scalable way.

The XRPL community can propose amendments to improve the network, but the focus remains on making the ledger more useful for payments and the movement of value.

6. The Same Infrastructure Can Support Multiple Assets

The speed-and-cost advantage is not limited to XRP. The same XRPL infrastructure can support stablecoins, tokenized assets, and other forms of digital value.

That is why Ripple executive argue that XRPL’s speed was not accidental. The ledger was designed from day one around a specific purpose: moving money and value quickly, cheaply, and reliably.
