A U.S. federal court has officially approved Anthropic’s $1.5 billion settlement with thousands of authors over claims that the AI company used copyrighted books without permission to help train its Claude chatbot. The ruling makes it the largest known copyright settlement in U.S. history. It also marks the first major AI copyright lawsuit in the country to reach a final settlement.

Court Approves Landmark AI Copyright Deal

On July 20, U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin granted final approval to the settlement in a San Francisco federal court. The judge dismissed objections that the payout was too small.

The case began in 2024, when a group of writers accused Anthropic of using pirated copies of their books to train Claude, its large language model. Anthropic, which is backed by Amazon and Alphabet, denied wrongdoing. However, it agreed to settle after lengthy legal proceedings.

According to Anthropic, more than 91% of eligible authors and publishers have already claimed their share of the settlement funds.

Anthropic’s Historic Copyright Settlement Explained

Why Anthropic Had to Pay

A major turning point came in June 2025, when the court ruled that training AI models on copyrighted books qualifies as fair use under U.S. copyright law.

However, the judge also found that Anthropic had stored more than seven million pirated books in a central digital library. That library was not necessarily used only for AI training. That unauthorized storage was ruled to violate copyright law and became the basis for the damages.

Without a settlement, Anthropic faced a trial where potential damages could have reached hundreds of billions of dollars.

Biggest Copyright Recovery on Record

Lead attorney Justin Nelson called the agreement a “historic settlement,” saying it represents the largest copyright recovery ever recorded.

The court also approved over $101 million in attorney fees. This amount was lower than the $187.5 million originally requested after reviewing the legal work involved.

Some authors objected to the settlement, arguing that the compensation was too low or that certain copyright holders were excluded. Judge Martinez-Olguin rejected those arguments. She said the deal reflected the legal risks both sides faced if the case had gone to trial.

More AI Copyright Battles Ahead

While this lawsuit is now resolved, Anthropic’s legal challenges are far from over. Some authors and publishers opted out of the settlement and are continuing separate copyright lawsuits against the company.

The case is one of dozens of ongoing legal battles between AI developers and copyright owners. Therefore, it is a key precedent as courts continue to define how copyrighted material can legally be used to train artificial intelligence models.
