At least 10 people were killed and another 21 miners were injured in a gold mine collapse in northern Sudan. The accident occurred on Saturday at mines in the Awni mining district near the border with Egypt.
Rescue operation
As of Sunday morning, the bodies of 10 victims had been recovered from the rubble and 21 injured workers had been rescued, a miner who was at the mine during the collapse told AFP. He asked not to be named for security reasons.
Another survivor said that the search operation was carried out by the miners themselves, who had little equipment at their disposal. According to him, other people may have remained trapped under the rubble, and the search for those missing was continuing.

Dangerous gold mining
As Asharq Al-Awsat reports, many young Sudanese work at unregulated gold mines by hand and with primitive tools for low daily pay. Such workers face chemical poisoning and frequent collapses.
Last week, another collapse in the South Kordofan region killed at least 82 people, while dozens more were injured. Industry estimates indicate that artisanal and small-scale mining, carried out in unofficial areas or at closed mines, accounts for most of the gold mined in Sudan. Even before the war pushed nearly 20 million Sudanese into acute food insecurity, more than two million people worked in this sector.
