Bitcoin is being pinched between two moving lines on the chart, and according to one analyst, history says that kind of squeeze doesn’t stay quiet for long.

Bitcoin is currently trading around $63,500. Right now, it sits almost exactly on top of its 200-week moving average, near $63,700, a level Bitcoin closed just below last week as well. Above that, a separate longer-term resistance band, sitting near $69,000, has been sliding lower for months.

The twist: these two lines are converging. One is falling, the other is rising, and there’s only so much room left before Bitcoin is forced to pick a side, either breaking above the falling resistance band or slipping below the rising 200-week average. The analyst expects that decision to arrive within the next couple of months, if not sooner.

Why On-Chain Data Suggests One More Drop

Several on-chain indicators, including the widely watched MVRV ratio, tend to bottom out below zero at the end of past cycles. Right now, that measure is close, but hasn’t gotten there yet. That gap suggests the possibility of one more move lower before those indicators fully reset, a pattern that has repeated across multiple past cycles.

The August Pattern Nobody Wants to Hear

Here’s the twist that makes this month worth watching closely. In every prior midterm election year, Bitcoin has posted a red August. Declines have ranged from 5% to 18%: down 15% in 2022, down 15% in 2018, down 18% in 2014, and down 5% in 2010.

The irony is that July, the month right before, has almost always been strong in those same years, up 20% in July 2022, nearly 40% in July 2018, and up 7% this past July. Strength in July followed immediately by weakness in August has become one of the more consistent seasonal patterns in Bitcoin’s history.

Not a Guarantee, Just a Pattern

The analyst was careful to note that short-term price action remains fundamentally unpredictable, comparing it to a random walk that can’t be reliably timed week to week.

Even in 2022, Bitcoin didn’t actually reach its bear market resistance band during the summer rally before the August correction hit, and by the time it finally touched that band months later in October, the band itself had fallen well below where Bitcoin had been trading in August.

The main argument isn’t a specific price call. It’s that the shrinking gap between these two key levels leaves little room left for Bitcoin to keep drifting sideways, and once a decision is made in either direction, volatility is likely to increase sharply from where it’s been over the quiet summer months.

A Different Read: The Longer the Wait, the Bigger the Move

Not everyone is framing the sideways action as a setup for more downside. Analyst Michaël van de Poppe pointed out that Bitcoin has essentially traded sideways since February, with little happening in between. His take: the longer an asset stays rangebound, the more forceful the eventual breakout tends to be, and the more patience it demands once that move begins.

Van de Poppe argued the eventual move out of this range could run well past $100,000 without offering much opportunity to re-enter along the way, meaning those who exit early on the first sign of strength risk missing the bulk of the move entirely.
