For spring, Fforme creative director Frances Howie was thinking about what it means to build a young American luxury brand around ready-to-wear.

“We are not making handbags. We are not making a perfume. We are making clothes, and people are coming and they are buying our clothes,” Howie said during a preview. “Product is king.”

It’s a consequential position at a moment when fashion has largely moved beyond the quiet-luxury fixation that made rigorous, logo-free clothes newly legible. For Howie, the challenge now is how to grow without abandoning the sophistication and exacting approach on which Fforme was built. Three years into defining its vocabulary, the answer increasingly seems to be not reinvention, but expansion.

Dresses — particularly its cooler approach to cocktail and evening — have gained traction, while the unstructured, bias-cut lightness customers respond to is becoming intrinsic to the brand. Spring pushed further into daywear, grounding Fforme’s architectural tendencies in the modular logic of American sportswear.

The 1930s provided a historical thread, when a new ease was transforming the way women dressed. Howie translated that idea by stripping away weight: hand-tailored coats shed canvas and lining; a paper-light, heat-seamed car coat came in silk-cotton faille; a translucent parka revealed the layers beneath. A black linen column suspended with leather harnessing brought a tougher edge to the brand’s sometimes pristine world.

That friction was important. Japanese denim and napa leather brought a workwear toughness to the clothes, with exposed selvedges turning construction into detail and flashes of skin helping cut through the polish. Liquid metallics pushed in another direction: fabric woven with real spun-metal thread by an Italian mill with roots in 1930s lamé production gave familiar shapes an almost molten surface. Even French lace eschewed florals for abstract markings.

Howie’s craftsmanship is exacting, but crucially, the clothes didn’t depend on knowing any of it. On the hanger at retail, the cut, hand and unusual fabrications will make their own argument. “There’s a lot of the textures that are quite rich, but the shapes are quite archetypal,” Howie said. “It’s more about connecting with you and enticing you to desire something than…blowing you away with some kind of outrageous thing.”

The brand is scaling the world around those clothes, too, staging spring in a bright, airy space at the Starrett-Lehigh Building, its largest show space yet. For a young independent label, consistently mounting a runway show is no small investment — and the bigger stage is a quiet marker of momentum.

Fforme is betting that it doesn’t need to get louder as fashion’s attention shifts. Its more compelling path may be to keep complicating what it already does well: letting toughness interrupt refinement, expanding a wardrobe around its emerging codes and giving all that precision a little more life.
