In addition to winning up to $50,000 to make a short film featuring Lower Manhattan, the winner of our Filmmaker in Chief creative residency will be treated to a two-month stay in Mint House, a high-tech hotel with apartment-style rooms designed for both short-term and extended stays.
At Mint House, the Filmmaker in Chief will not just be living in Lower Manhattan — on location, so to speak. They’ll also be staying in a landmarked historic building filled to the brim with incredible amenities, restaurants, bars and experiences. Located inside Art Deco masterpiece 70 Pine, which once served as the headquarters of insurance giant AIG, Mint House amenities include a full laundry room, on-demand groceries, and a two story fitness center stocked with weights, treadmills and other machines, as well as a golf simulator and a two-lane bowling alley.
Along with hotel common areas like a TV lounge and a lobby, there’s also a mini movie theater inside of the old AIG bank vault, where the Filmmaker in Chief can screen their own work or watch films that inspire them. And there’s a co-working space guests can reserve — this space can even serve as the de facto production studio for the Filmmaker in Chief, for production meetings, casting calls, script readings and more. The building is home to eateries like the Black Fox coffee shop, City Acres Market and Blue Park Kitchen. You’ll also find Michelin-starred Crown Shy, the two-Michelin-starred Saga and Overstory, which was recently dubbed one of the best bars in the world and offers 360-degree views of New York City that belong on the big screen. Once you leave the building, you’re right in the heart of Lower Manhattan, close to the 24/7 neighborhood’s subway lines, waterfront views, historic sites, dive bars and fancy spots.
Mint House accommodations are set up for long stays; the Filmmaker in Chief’s apartment will have a full kitchen, a TV, a queen bed, an oversized safe and a full coffee setup courtesy of Black Fox Coffee. To make things feel even homier, each apartment has a record player, and guests can pick from among select albums to play.
