Despite having over a dozen magazine covers to her name, Khan is still a very ‘present’ cover star on set. The actor, however, has a perceptive knack for knowing when to pitch in and when to pipe down. “Does this sari need to be shorter?” she asks the stylist, genuinely curious and without any trace of self-aggrandisement. When an explanation for the floor-trailing length of the garment is offered to her, she readily accepts it, grateful for having learnt something new. It could have something to do with the way her eyes crinkle attractively when she is happy with a shot or the fact that she makes it a point to thank everyone on set individually before leaving, but there is something undeniably likeable about Khan. Maybe that’s why, in an industry that thrives on encouraging catfights between female contemporaries, she can proudly count Ananya Panday, Janhvi Kapoor and Radhika Madan as friends. “The industry is a huge place, and with OTT, there really is work for everybody,” she says. “I actually believe that I share more in common with Janhvi and Ananya than I do with my school friends because they understand what it’s like to be young and ambitious as an actor and have the pandemic waylay your plans. We’re all confident in our own skin, which is so necessary.”
Confident though she may be, conceited she is not. As the set is being dismantled and we’re discussing final touches with the photographer, she comes up to us, an earnest look in her almond-shaped eyes, and asks if she can click photos of some of her looks with her phone camera. “To show my mother,” she explains, a shy smile playing about her lips. “I always show her.” Khan is a study in dualities—committed to her craft but childlike in her approach, risky in her actions but responsible in their outcome. Instead of submitting to the push and pull of either side, however, she is simply paving a path that runs through the middle.
